exquisite corpse

Exquisite Corpse Inc. is a collective of artists and architects which was formed with the aim of fostering an exchange between the two disciplines. The TRANSIT LOUNGE is being curated on behalf of Exquisite Corpse by Miriam Mlecek and Katie Hepworth. Miriam and Katie are both artists whose work developed from an architectural background and primarily involves urban interventions, that is, appropriations of the city using sound, projections and architectonic installations. Their collaboration began 6 years ago with a community project in Leichhardt, and culminated recently in an installation at blank_space gallery in April 2005.

Exquisite Corpse Inc. ist ein Kollektiv bestehend aus Künstlern und Architekten mit dem Ziel Austausch und interdisziplinäres Arbeiten zu fördern. Die TRANSIT LOUNGE wird im Rahmen von Exquisite Corpse von Miriam Mlecek und Katie Hepworth kuratiert. Miriam und Katie sind zwei Künstlerinnen deren Arbeit sich aus architektonischen Hintergrund entwickelt hat und primär auf urbane Interventionen zielt, z.B. Installationen, Projektionen, Sound und Eingriffe im öffentlichen Raum. Ihre Zusammenarbeit begann vor 6 Jahren mit einem „community project“ in Sydney und reicht bis zur jüngsten Ausstellung und Installation „Pendolino“ in der blank_space Galerie im April 2005.

tara badcock

Tara Badcock graduated from the School of Art , University of Tasmania with First Class Honors majoring in Lithography, in 1997. Since then Badcock has progressively experimented with textiles and embroidery as potent conveyors of collective story as well as individual experience. Combined with printed imagery, staining, and dyeing Badcock incorporates found materials as a locating and mapping device to articulate a dialogue between environment, history, and the present.Tara Badcock has been the recipient of a Rosamund McCulloch Studio Residency at the Cité International des Arts, Paris in 2002; an Arts Tasmania Heritage Residency at Highfield House, Stanley also in 2002, and an Arts Tasmania Printmaking Workshop Residency at Atelier Lacouriére et Frélaut, Montmatre, Paris in 2005. As well as undertaking public art projects, Badcock has maintained an ongoing level of professional development by teaching lithography at TAFE technical college Tasmania , and by running workshops in textile art and transfer printing techniques, at Launceston Church Grammar School and Scotch Oakburn College , both in northern Tasmania .Tara Badcock has been a member of "The Embroidery Gang" since 1999, a Hobart-based group of artists who meet on a weekly basis, working with textiles and exploring the possibilities of embroidery and stitch. Badcock has been exhibiting both her textile works and Lithographs on a regular basis for the past eight years within Australia , New Zealand , Sweden , and more recently at several venues in  France . Currently Badcock represents Australia in a world-touring exhibition titled "Envoyez mon ami à l'ecole"( "Send my friend to school"), organized for UNESCO's World Education by 2015 Forum, "Education pour tous par 2015", currently on show at UNESCO Headquaters, Place de Fontenoy, Paris.

Tara Badcock absolvierte 1997 eine Ausbildung an der School of Art, University of Tasmania mit First Class Honors in Lithografie. Seit der Zeit experimentiert Badcock zunehmend mit Textilien und Stickerei als potente Forderer kollektiver Geschichten und individueller Erfahrungen. Badcock kombiniert hierbei gefundene Objekte kombiniert mit gedruckten Bildern, Färbetechnik und Kontrastierung als Lokalisierungs-Metapher um den Dialog aus Geschichte, Umwelt und Gegenwart zu artikulieren. christopher bennie

Christopher Bennie is a New Zealand born artist currently living and working in Brisbane , Australia . Whether presenting videos, paintings, prints or constructions, Bennie seeks to explore particular nuances embedded in life that best translate a notion of transcendence. Bennie employs notions of the everyday to self-consciously explore the contradictions he sees around him. Personal affectations with subjects such as roads, lounge-rooms, dance clubs, landscape, swimming pools, cardboard, tape, contemporary detritus etc. offer reconciliation with the ordinary and the mundane in our everyday lives. Yet Bennie’s point of view, point and shoot aesthetic captures a reverence within the inconsequentiality of the banal that speaks of something far more obtainable and rich. For Bennie, love and longing exist side by side in the theatricality of the contemporary everyday. In his work we witness a dance, a play between the ordinary and the sublime that represents a state of physical and metaphysical paradox. From video’s of the artist dancing in his mother’s lounge-room to photographs of used polystyrene and packaging tape, Bennie’s work offers moments of clarity where the tension between a feeling of complete inconsequentiality within the world and a profound sense of beauty exist. For Bennie the image, or the subject, in its function as a meaningful symbolic gesture, the manifestation of an event or idea, simply represents a snapshot of the forces and feelings guiding the current contemporary climate. Bennie’s task is to locate the moments in which pure dichotomy manifests, record it, photograph it, construct it and present it.

Bennie’s work has been shown at State and National Graduate exhibitions; Freshcut 2002 and Hatched 2003 respectively.  He has participated in important National exhibitions including ‘Savvy: New Australian Art’ 2004, and ‘All that Glitters: Contemporary Visions of the Gold Coast, 2004, and upcoming ‘Plus Factors’ at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art in Melbourne. In 2004 Judge, Elizabeth Ann MacGregor ( curator Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney ) awarded his 23-minute video ‘Mothership’ runner-up in the 2004 Conrad Jupiter’s Art Prize. Recently Bennie returned from a three month residency/cultural exchange in China . Bennie is currently enrolled in a doctorate degree at Griffith University .

Der gebürtige Neuseeländer Christopher Bennie arbeitet und lebt in seiner Wahlheimat Brisbane,Australien. Ob in Videos,Bildern,Drucken oder Konstruktionen, Bennie ist stets auf der Suche nach speziellen im Leben eingebetteten Nuancen ,welche sich am naheliegendsten in eine Vorstellung von Transzendenz übertragen lassen. Bennie verwendet alltägliche Begrifflichkeiten um sich die Gegensätze seiner Umwelt selbst bewusst zu machen und zu ergründen.Seine durchaus diversen persönlichen Vorlieben für z.B. Strassenszenen, Lounges, Clubs, Landschaften, Schwimmbäder, Pappe,Klebeband und Schutt  bieten Versöhnung mit dem Mundänen und Ordinären unseres Lebens. Dennoch verspürt man bei Bennies Werk eine verträumte Haltung und sehnsüchtige Blickwinkel auf etwas weit Entferntes, Begehrbares und Wünschenswertes.

Für Bennie existiert Liebe und Sehnsucht theatralisch Seite an Seite im modernen Lebensstil. Wir werden Zeugen einer Spielform des Banalen und des Besonderen,einem metaphysischen Paradox. Von Videos die den Künstler tanzend im Wohnzimmer seiner Mutter zeigen, bis hin zu Fotografien gebrauchten Paketklebebandes bietet Bennies Arbeit Momente der Klarheit in welchen ein Gefühl voller Inkonsequenz der Welt und ein tiefer Sinn für Schönheit koexistieren können. Für Bennie ist das Bild in seiner Funktion als symbolische und ausdrucksstarke Geste, die Manifestation einer Idee, Repräsentation einer Momentaufnahme von Kräften und Gefühlen der aktuellen gesellschaftlichen Strömungen. Bennie stellt sch die Aufgabe diese Momente aufzuspüren, zu dokumentieren, festzuhalten, zu rekonstruieren und wiederzugeben.

Bennies Werke wurden in der State and National Graduate Ausstellung; Freshcut 2002 und Hatched 2003 gezeigt. bianca calandra

Bianca Calandra is from Sydney. With a formal background in Design and Film, she has since become far more focussed and active as a mixed media artist and musician.

Having co-produced her first EP in 2004 (under the name b.calandra – www.bcalandra.com), she was promptly featured in NOISE 2003 (the Australian National Youth Media Arts Festival), toured the East coast of Australia, was aired as part of Radiotopia festival (Germany), received funding to develop new material and is now working on her first full length album of post pop. She is also currently producing and co-writing a collaborative album of experimental post rock music under the name of ‘Machine est Mon Coeur’
(machine is my heart) with French musician Gabin Lopez.  She occasionally plays in other people’s bands too.

Although her art practice is now beginning to include installation (including sound), much of her past work has mainly consisted of mixed media painting. Her recent (and past) works have incorporated and re-contextualised found objects, whilst exploring issues concerning overproduction and the obsolete. She is currently a resident artist at the Karl Hofer Gesellschaft (Berlin).

stephanie carrick

Stephanie is one of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's senior cross-platform producers creating integrated content for TV, ITV, DVD, video/audio streaming, mobile, websites, games and animations.Recent and ongoing projects include: Supervising Producer for a children’s ITV project with ITRI (interactive television research institute  Murdoch University ); Executive producing two short-form series funded by the PFTC (Queensland Film Corporation); and scoping a community based mobile phone project with ANAT and DLux media for the Mobile Journeys project.Stephanie received the 2003 AIMIA (Australian Interactive Media Industry Association) award for best arts/lifestyle and the 2001 AMIA for best broadband content, and the 2000 ATOM (Australian teachers of media) award for best reference website.She is currently focused on creating content for the ABC's new digital channel ABC2 including writing and directing a series for pre-schoolers and curation of video art interstitials.

Brian Degger 

Brian is a UK based artist who's self directed arts development was in Adelaide, South Australia. A formally trained biotechnologist, he plays with notions of ecology, alienation, and what it means to be an urban inhabitant. He does this through word, moving image and sound. His first foray as an artist was spoken word in the Interactive Art Gallery, Adelaide.  He has had two photographic exhibitions of local Adelaide live acts (AdLibEmulsion) and animals (FFS, fur, feathers & scales), as well as musical performances of his own and others songs. His moving image pieces have been screened in Adelaide as part of SA living Artists week (2003, 2004, 2005) and OpenHouse (2003). His images have also been projected in DriversLane, Melbourne (2004) and by Epoch, Dublin, Ireland (2005).

He has participated in a number of workshops and master classes given by national and international artists. During the 2004 Adelaide fringe, he was part of a team of artist that assisted Blast Theory(UK) stage and perform "I like frank, in Adelaide". For this mixed reality game he, in collaboration with Nick Tandavanitj, designed the online environment, a 3d representation of Adelaide city. During the running of  the game, he was on the streets to help stranded players with their mobile devices.

He recently helped Ken Rinaldo exhibit ' Telematic Spider Bots' as part of the north eastern England media festival, Avfest 2006 (Newcastle/Sunderland/Middlesbrough).

cat hope

Cat Hope is a Perth based sound and performance artist whose practice increasingly includes video. Cat writes music for dance, theatre, solo material as well as for her band Gata Negra. She constructs audio visual installations, and more recently has worked with performance installations. Her work has toured Japan , Europe and the USA on numerous occasions and examples of her sound work is housed in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.Cat works as a live musician focuses on the bass spectrum, and her work across all platforms always involves the body. She has performed extensive research into video and sound triggers, screen possibilities and the relationship between sound and image, which has led to projects such as the video projection surface known as the DACS (Digital Audio Control Skirt). She has also directed theatre shows, music videos and dance collaborations.Her most recent work VOYEURAGES was commissioned for the National Review of Live Art 05 and is a 30 minute work for 10 performers who "wear" video projections and speakers in their mouths. Her sound installation PICPOCKET, commissioned by the Biennale of Electronic Arts Perth 04 (BEAP), is currently on exhibit in the John Curtin Gallery and will be shown at this year’s Ars Electronica in Austria . She has also been commissioned to perform research into the sounds of decay in the forensic labs at Symbiotica, and to create a new work for the upcoming Totally Huge New Music and Liquid Architecture Festivals.

Ihre aktuelle Arbeit VOYEURAGES im Auftrag der National Review of Live Art 05 besteht aus 30 Minuten Intervallen fur 10 Performer welche Videoprojektionen und Lautsrecher im Mund “tragen”. Die Klanginstallation PICPOCKET, im Auftrag der Biennale of Electronic Arts Perth 04 (BEAP), ausgestellt in der John Curtin Gallery wird auf der diesjahrigen Ars Electronica in Osterreich zu sehen sein. Cat Hope erhielt von der Symbiotica den Auftrag fur eine Forschung zum Klang des “Verfalls” und eine neue Arbeit fur das anstehende Totally Huge New Music and Liquid Architecture Festival.

Jocelyn Moen is an Australian singer-songwriter living in Paris. With a Bacelor of Music Composition from Sydney University. She came to Paris in 2004 and has since been performing solo and with various other artists around Paris. Performance venues include: Les 7 Lezards, Theatre Aleph, Le Vaisseau Fantome, Zoe Bouillon, and the Australian Embassy. She has worked a lot with aclaimed Jazz pianist Chris Cody, and will soon release an album with him and other musicians she's met in public.

Her songwriting style nestles somewhere between jazz, blues and folk. Her songs tell stories of encounters and exchanges, love, homesickness and the frustrations and joy of the traveller.

alex needs

Alex Needs is an emerging Sydney-based writer currently writing a novel which revolves around the idea of being man in a woman's world. Spawned from real, lived experiences this piece will form a social commentary on the "fast food" nature of gossip journalism and the ravenous way in which it is devoured by the consumer within the context of intense gender politics. Having begun his post Sydney University career as a writer for an onlineportal back in 1999 Alex then found his way to London where he worked as a music journalist. Visa expired he trudged back to Sydney in 2002 when he landed a gig that left him immersed in celebrity journalism. For the previous three years, in his work as the foreign editor at a women's magazine, Alex explored the temporal nature of those within society, particularly focusing on fame and celebrity. Exploring and examining the ways in which people consume and indeed rely on mass-market celebrity gossip for much more than entertainment is of particular interest to Alex. It's no wonder then it is shaping his current work.

Alex Needs ist ein newcomer in der Sydney Schriftsteller Szene und arbeitet zur Zeit an einer Novelle welche sich mit der Thematik eines Mannes in einer Frauenwelt beschäftigt. Basierend auf persönlichen Erfahrungen wird das Buch auf einen einen Sozialkommentar zur fast-food Identität und dem Heisshunger der Gesellschaft auf Klatschjournalismus in “gender” bezogenen Kontext zielen. Nachdem Alex 1999 seine Karriere nach der Universitat zunachst als Kolumnist eines Onlineportals began, setzte er seinen Weg als Musikjournalist in London fort. 2002 zog er nach Sydney zureuck um dort eine Stelle als Editor eines “celebrity” Magazines anzutreten. In den letzten drei Jahren sammelte Alex Erfahrungen in der Redaktion einer Frauenzeitschrift und erforschte die weltliche Natur des anderen Geschlechts im Hinblick auf Gesellschaft,Politik, Beruhnmheit und “Star-Dasein”. Der Einfluss der Massenmedienkultur, der Art und Weise in welcher Star-Klatsch von der Gesellschaft konsumiert wird und zu mehr als blosser Unterhaltung ausartet beeinflusst Alex stark in seiner Arbeit als Schriftsteller.

Elle is an emerging artist working as a graphic designer in Sydney. Being 22 years old and a Sydney native, she graduated recently from the Sydney College of the Arts. Elle has been associated with exhibitions such as 'kitch' at the Newspace/Rozelle in 2002, 'artport' at the Newspace/Rozelle in 2003, and has documented exhibitions for the firstdraft gallery in Surry Hills. A large body of Elles’ work is digital with an emphasis on photography. These images are then manipulated in a creative process, using digital media as well as textas, crayons and pencils.

Elle ist eine junge Kunstlerin und Grafik Designerin aus Sydney mit einem Abschluss des Sydney College of the Arts. Elles Arbeit wird mit Ausstellungen wie z.B.'kitch' im Newspace/Rozelle in 2002, 'artport' im Newspace/Rozelle 2003 in Verbindung gebracht und dokumentierte  fur die “firstdraft gallery” in Surry Hills. Ein grosser Teil von Elles’ Arbeit ensteht zunachst als digitale Fotografie und wird im weiteren kreativen Prozess  mit digitalen Medien, Kreiden und Blei-und Buntstiften manipuliert.

Sumugan Sivanesan is based in Sydney , Australia . He engages in a conceptual / experimental practice, that explores notions of nature, technology and culture across a number of mediums.He has included work at various international events such as the VI Coloquio Internacional Arte Digital (Cuba, 2004), Club Transmediale (Germany 2004), Electrofringe (Australia 2003), Abstraction Now (Vienna 2003), New Forms (Canada 2003), the International Symposium for Electronic Art (Japan 2002), d>ART (Australia 2002 & 2004), Liquid Architecture (Australia 2002 & 2004), Experimenta (Australia 2001).A collection of sound works "Spare Your Speakers" has been released on Cronica Electronica (www.cronicaelectronica.org).
